Team India lifts T20 World Cup, beats New Zealand by 96 runs, scripts history

In a night that will be etched in cricketing folklore, India successfully defended their T20 World Cup title by annihilating New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After being invited to bat first, the Men in Blue unleashed a historic assault, posting a massive 255/5 in their 20 overs—the highest-ever total in a T20 World Cup final. The top order led the charge, with Abhishek Sharma (52 off 21), Sanju Samson (89 off 46), and Ishan Kishan (54 off 25) all crossing the fifty-run mark, marking the first time the top three batters have done so in a single T20I innings.

New Zealand's chase never truly took flight as they were hit by the Jasprit Bumrah storm early on. The pace spearhead delivered a clinical performance, finishing with figures of 4/15, including a devastating spell where he removed Jimmy Neesham and Matt Henry on successive deliveries. While Tim Seifert provided some resistance with a quickfire 52 and skipper Mitchell Santner fought back with a gritty 43, the target of 256 proved to be an insurmountable mountain for the Black Caps.

The Indian spinners, led by Axar Patel’s three-wicket haul and Varun Chakaravarthy’s crucial breakthrough, ensured that the required run rate spiraled out of control. Despite a mid-innings flurry of sixes from Daryl Mitchell and Santner, the disciplined Indian bowling unit kept chipping away at the wickets. The match reached its climax in the 19th over when Abhishek Sharma took the final wicket of Jacob Duffy, triggering wild celebrations across the country.

With this victory, India has achieved a historic "Triple Crown," becoming the first team to win three T20 World Cup titles and the first host nation to lift the trophy. The win also marks back-to-back titles for the defending champions, solidifying their status as the undisputed kings of the shortest format. For New Zealand, it was another case of "so close yet so far" as they fell to their third defeat in a major ICC final.
